We know that Melissa had a bit of a rough go of it before she came to CSRA because she had incredibly long matted hair and she was terrified of everyone and everything. She was particularly afraid of men. After a few months in a quiet home, she has calmed down somewhat. She has shown us that she has the capacity to get comfortable with folks, given some time and space. She is still reactive to new things, and men that are walking by. We've learned that to get to know her, its best to ignore her, and let her check you out. We want to be very honest that Melissa can be very hand-shy and startles very easily. We do not think she would ever be an appropriate match for a home that has children, or where children come to visit-- She can be hand shy, and still startles very easily. We also know that she is very vocal about every thing, so she's not a good match for a home with shared walls (i.e. apartments and condos).
She loves her chow. She eats as soon as she is given her food and cleans her bowl. She is house trained with a doggy door, and before she learned it, she would bark at the door to let her foster mom know she needed to go out. She also loves small soft toys. She will play by herself for a while, but she likes to bring you her toy to play tug. We know that Melissa has some challenges, but she is a very special little girl and the right furever family is out there for her.
